Event Overview (History of the Huey)

The Battle Creek community, during the same time the “Wall that Heals” will be in Battle Creek, will be hosting the arrival of Huey Helicopters.  This will be a community‑focused event designed to bring people together with a most unique opportunity to see the Bell HU-1 Iroquois, an iconic turbine-powered utility helicopter developed from a 1950’s U.S. Army need for a medical evacuation (MEDEVAC) aircraft, first flying in 1956 and  becoming synonymous with Vietnam for troop transport, aeromedical evacuation, cargo, search and rescue, and air assault, earning its nickname from its original HU-1 designation to a 1962 reclassification to UH-1 thus becoming the source of its popular and enduring nickname, the “Huey.” The Huey played a key and pivotal role in the Vietnam War to which its legacy lives on.  This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see the Huey up close, and to visit with the pilots and crew that will be present during its visit.
